As state law requires, I want to remind families of the district's lottery process for prekindergarten placements. Education Law 3602-e and the Commissioner's Regulations stipulate that when there are more eligible children than available prekindergarten seats for a given school year, we must use a random selection lottery. This ensures all children have an equal chance at being admitted to our prekindergarten programs. We will run the lottery to fill forty (40) available prekindergarten slots for our community collaborators. Once those seats are filled (22 and 18) based upon the Board of Education approved RFPs), the lottery will establish a waitlist order should additional placements become available. While we aim to accommodate as many families as possible, the lottery process is designed to be fair and equitable when demand exceeds capacity. We appreciate your understanding as we follow these state guidelines. Families interested in having their child considered for a prekindergarten placement for the upcoming school year must complete the UPK Interest Survey during the open window. The survey will be available online starting Friday, June 14th, and must be submitted by the close date of June 21st. No entries will be accepted before or after those dates. Completing the interest survey is mandatory. After the lottery, the receiving school will contact families of children who received a placement to complete the final registration paperwork and enrollment process. Don't delay - fill out the interest survey between June 14th and June 21st if you want your child considered for prekindergarten this fall.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce our incoming principal, Ms. Robyn Milliner, who will join us on August 1st. Ms. Milliner brings invaluable experience and a steadfast commitment to educational excellence that will enrich our school district. Over the past nine years, Ms. Milliner has served as a school leader throughout New York City public schools, where she has garnered a well-deserved reputation for fostering a nurturing and dynamic learning environment. Her approach to leadership is rooted in promoting academic achievement, cultivating strong relationships between students and teachers, and encouraging personal growth for all. Ms. Milliner's impressive background includes spearheading initiatives that have yielded remarkable results. As principal of a single-gender school, she piloted a phonics curriculum aligned with best practices, resulting in 98% of her kindergarteners reading at or above grade level by the end of the 2022-2023 school year. This achievement is a testament to her ability to coach and develop teachers in implementing innovative practices that drive student success. Furthermore, Ms. Milliner's experience as a turnaround school leader showcases her expertise in change management and collaborative problem-solving. She has successfully led teams in enhancing mindsets and practices, resulting in improved academic outcomes and a four-year charter renewal for her previous school. With her wealth of knowledge, passion for education, and commitment to creating inclusive and supportive environments, Ms. Milliner is poised to lead George Washington Intermediate School into an exciting new chapter. Please join me in welcoming her to our community and extending your full support as she embarks on this new journey. Sincerely, Dan Rehman Superintendent if Schools

Sinceramente, Dina Reilly

Summer Reading
Dear Families, Summer provides an excellent opportunity for our students to foster their love of reading! Children who read over the summer maintain or even improve their literacy skills while exploring new worlds available to them through books. We are pleased to share that our school district is continuing our partnership with the West Hempstead Public Library through the Adventure Begins at Your Library summer reading campaign. We encourage our elementary students to read each and every day. Your child will be able to log his/her reading time with the West Hempstead Library’s Read Squared minutes tracker. In recognition of your child’s commitment to reading, the library is awarding exciting incentives to students who reach their reading milestones. Your child will have access to self-selected reading material, both digitally and in hardcopy, through the West Hempstead Library resources. Successful reading experiences begin when children can access high-interest books. We encourage students to read books that are engaging and of interest to them. In the event your child would like to peruse a suggested list of book titles, you can contact the West Hempstead Library staff. All books, at the library, are available to families who have a West Hempstead Library card. Many book titles are available both in hardcopy and in digital versions. If you have not done so yet, please contact the library to sign up for membership On behalf of our entire West Hempstead School District faculty and staff, I wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Sincerely, Dina Reilly
