Competitive Class:
Position requires a qualification exam and candidate must be appointed off a certified civil service eligible list (with additional requirement of being a Nassau County resident to take the test). Entitled to disciplinary proceedings (section 75) after six months of continuous service, in a permanent appointment.
Non-Competitive Class:
Position does not have to be hired via a civil service list. Any candidate could be selected as long as he/she meets the qualifications for the position. Entitled to disciplinary proceedings (section 75) after five years of continuous service, in a permanent appointment.
Labor Class:
Position does not have to be hired via a civil service list. Any candidate could be selected as long as he/she meets the qualifications for the position. Procedures to follow for discipline/termination are through contract agreement.
Testing:
Open-Competitive: To take a test, candidates MUST meet qualifications for the exam and be a Nassau County resident.
Promotional: To take a test, candidates MUST: (a) work in the district offering the test; (b) be in line of promotion; (c) have attained permanent status in current title.
