Yesterday evening, a New York State Supreme Court judge issued a ruling that the current statewide mandate ordering students and staff to wear masks in schools is unconstitutional and cannot be enforced.
Following this decision, the New York State Education Department notified all school districts throughout the state that the Department of Health will appeal the decision, and a stay will be issued that will restore the mask rule. Therefore, the SED has advised all districts that schools must continue to follow the mask rule.
This morning the Department of Health issued a statement to school districts supporting the New York State Education Department’s position on continued making in schools.
I will keep you updated on the legal appeal process as this situation develops.

Each week we will select an HOM student ambassador to describe a recent situation when they used a Habit of Mind. Mia Machare (grade 8) was our first participant and she crushed it! Here's a portion of what she said - The habit of Finding Humor means finding the whimsical and unexpected in situations. We understand how hectic this time is and the difficulty in securing a PCR test. We are still asking for one if your child has COVID, even if the test results come after the quarantine period is over. For documentation purposes, please report your child's quarantine information to the Nassau County Department of Health website and send a copy of the quarantine letter to your child's teacher or building administration. As some of you are aware, our research students have entered and are state winners for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition. Their project is to design a device that will detect water from excessive storm flooding within a home or apartment. They have created a survey to help them better understand what features should be included when developing a device for alerting the home owner and emergency services in the event of dangerous flooding.
