On Nov. 29, the West Hempstead School District welcomed students and their families to its annual Family Literacy Night at West Hempstead Secondary School.
Coordinated by Ms. Maureen Gegerson, the district’s director of humanities, the event serves as a way to strengthen the school-community connection while encouraging literacy through myriad games and activities. During the evening celebration, guests filled the cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium and the library media center to participate in activities and win prizes.
Children could also take home books from the large collection of gently used books that lined the tables. Students participated in several activities that included Connect Four, arts and crafts, Nok Hockey, and creating their own ocean slime.
