West Hempstead Secondary School’s girls varsity soccer team had a very successful fall season this year.
Led by head coach Kelly Bryne, the Rams finished their season with a record of 9-1-2. Unfortunately, they suffered from some serious injuries as Cayla Hogan and Mikayla Sarmiento both tore their ACLs. Even after suffering those losses, the Rams were able to win the conference. Madison AbiAoun was the driving force for the Rans as she led the team and conference with 17 goals and 11 assists this season. Her partner in crime, Sara Dos Santos, had four goals and nine assists this season and provided speed and dominance in the midfield along with Madison.
The Rams’ defense was led by senior Jancy Cabrera and goalkeeper Sophia Ciminera. Sophia led the conference with 147 saves. Along with senior Ivana Jimenez, junior Melanie Rodriguez and sophomore Daniella Healy, their team was well-rounded with upperclassmen leadership. The addition of two freshmen Willow Stern and Alexa Rivera really solidified their starting 11.
The team was fortunate to have substitutions this year and Maris Koller and Ariana Corona were able to come off the bench and provide them with valuable minutes on offense. Other substitutions included Dan'iaa Aruz, Denise Blanco, Michele Cherian, Sariah Day, Johana Fray, and Olivia Grant.
The Rams are already looking forward to next season as they will return with a strong combination of players.
