West Hempstead High School senior band student Asha Brown was honored at ERASE Racism’s 20th Anniversary Celebration and Benefit at the Garden City Hotel on Nov. 17. Brown, who wrote an essay on her experience as a young Black woman in America, was one of four high school students who earned a $500 prize.
“Today, I know that before anything, I am Black,” Brown wrote in her essay. “I know that the history and culture that I carry is powerful and eternal.”
Based in Syosset, ERASE Racism is a nonprofit, regional organization that leads public policy advocacy campaigns and related initiatives to promote racial equity in areas such as housing, public school education and community development.
