teacher reading book

On Oct. 17, the West Hempstead School District welcomed students and their families to its annual Family Literacy Night at West Hempstead Secondary School.

Coordinated by Ms. Maureen Gegerson, the district’s director of humanities, the event serves as a way to strengthen the school-community connection while encouraging literacy through myriad games and activities. During the evening celebration, guests filled the cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium and the library media center to participate in activities and win prizes.

Children could also take home books from the large collection of gently used books that lined the tables. Students participated in several activities that included a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, face painting and a dance contest. Additionally, the evening featured special guest readers such as Superintendent of Schools Dan Rehman and West Hempstead Secondary School Principal Joseph Pumo.
