West Hempstead Secondary School and Cornwell Avenue School recently teamed up to create an outdoor sensory path at Cornwell.
The project was led by the joint effort of the Art Honor Society and the support staff (occupational therapists) at Cornwell Avenue. A sensory path is a series of guided movements for children to follow, shown by markings on the ground or walls. Jumping, spinning, stomping and clapping are just a few of the fun activities that can be included in a sensory path.
The West Hempstead School District would like to thank West Hempstead Secondary School art teacher Ms. Cassie Ross-Dinin who took this idea on with enthusiasm despite the cold weather and worked tirelessly with her students to create a beautiful sensory path.
The district also thanks art teacher Ms. Laurie Shinners who opened her room to Ms. Ross-Dinin and the students, as well as Cornwell Avenue Head Custodians Mr. James Marciano and Mr. Durwood Cox for their ongoing assistance and insight. The district also commends the district’s Director of Pupil Personnel Services Bridget Karis and the district’s Director of Fine, Performing and Culinary Arts Laila Sales for their positive support of this project.
Cornwell Avenue Principal Ms. Deanna Sinito and Occupational Therapist Ms. Annemarie Boles were also instrumental in the completion of this project. When Ms. Boles presented the idea of the sensory path, Ms. Sinito immediately stepped in, guided and supported the project.
