District administrators, principals throughout the district and students gathered at George Washington School in West Hempstead as they unveiled its “Reading Rams” Book Vending Machine on Feb. 17.
Students can earn a free book with 50 points, which can be collected through activities such as demonstrating a Habit of Mind, displaying a random act of kindness or showing extra effort in their Reader’s Notebook entries.
The school’s book vending machine was made possible by the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. The SSAC felt that a book vending machine would be a great way to promote kindness and the importance of reading. Council members meet once a month with district Superintendent Dan Rehman to discuss issues and to make suggestions for the school, in addition to presentations at the board of education’s public meetings.
