Students at George Washington School in the West Hempstead School District took part in several team-building exercises during their kick-off assemblies from Oct. 13-15.
During the school’s assembly on Oct. 13, teachers took turns in reading the book, “The Book of Mistakes,” by Corinna Luyken to students in the auditorium. The picture book focuses on the idea that mistakes can blossom into a masterpiece.
“We all make mistakes, and nobody is perfect,” said George Washington School Principal Michelle Notti during the assembly. “It’s important to remember that a mistake is a masterpiece waiting to happen.”
Notti urged students to challenge themselves academically so that they could continue to succeed in the classroom. The assembly also featured elements of the district’s Habits of Mind program, which nourishes students’ social-emotional learning and aims to improve the performance of students under challenging conditions.
During the assembly, a trophy for George Washington Community Spirit Homeroom Challenge Award Community Spirit was unveiled. The winner of each month’s challenge gets to keep the coveted trophy in their homeroom for the month.
Students also teamed up outside to play games in which they had to strategize on how to complete each task.
