George Washington School student learns English with Google Translate

Momina Tahir, a sixth grader at George Washington School in West Hempstead, is quickly learning English by using Google Translate.

ENL teacher Ms. Alyssa Quagliata explained that Momina arrived to the U.S. from Pakistan in November. Every day, Momina has taught herself different English words and phrases by using Google Translate on her iPad to interact with her classmates and teachers. Momina introduced a special feature in the app to Ms. Quagliata and her fellow ENL teacher Ms. Erin Holtkamp, known as Phrasebook. This feature allows Momina to save common phrases, which makes it easier for her to speak with others.

“She has learned how to use technology in a meaningful way, and she’s really honing in on her home language to benefit her while making connections to the English language,” Ms. Quagliata said. “We’re very proud of her, and this just shows the resilience in our students here at George Washington.”
