Business Education

Business Education courses develop skills that enable the students to enter the business world and earn their way, either as full-time workers or in part-time employment, while continuing their education. Completion of a sequence in Business Education may be used to satisfy some of the elective requirements for a Regents diploma. Elective college level courses are available through Adelphi University to 11th and 12th graders with teacher recommendation. Career Management Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None (Required for 5-Unit Business Education Sequence)


The purpose of this course is to help students make appropriate career choices. Students will learn about themselves and
research careers that match their skills and interests. Instruction will also focus on interviewing skills and résumé writing.

Introduction to Business Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None (Required for 5-Unit Business Education Sequence)

This is an introductory course into the business world. Students will learn an overview of the business world including
management, marketing, accounting, finance, ethics and organizational structure.

Business Computer Applications Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None (Required for 5-Unit Business Education Sequence)

Students will learn to use a variety of Microsoft Office 2000 applications including Word (create newsletters, tables, and manipulate pictures), Power Point (compose a slide show presentation with animation) and Excel (compute with spreadsheets and create graphs).

College Business Law Grades 11-12

Prerequisite — None (suggested cumulative average – 85 or above and teacher recommendation)

Satisfactory performance in this course may result in 3 Adelphi University credits (optional) which are transferable to most colleges and universities. What are your rights? How can you protect your personal property and business? Have you ever
entered into a contract? This is a great course full of interesting topics that will help you now and in the future. Adelphi University course approval pending.

Management Grades 10-12

Prerequisite — None

This course will give you a basic understanding of the management of a corporate operation. You will learn how an effective manager handles the day-to-day operations and the human resources of a business. You will understand the process of running a business effectively and efficiently to reach the company’s goals.

College Accounting Grades 11-12

Prerequisite — None (suggested cumulative average – 85 or above and teacher recommendation)

Satisfactory performance in this course may result in 3 Adelphi University credits (optional) which are transferable to most colleges and universities. This program is designed specifically for college-bound juniors and seniors with business and/or
accounting as a potential college major. College Accounting is designed to provide students with an overview of the complete accounting cycle. This course emphasizes the advanced theory and procedures necessary for the proper maintenance of accounting records and the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Public Accountant. Students will learn to apply the internationally-recognized Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) while preparing financial statements, payroll records, and tax forms. Calculators are used and a minimal amount of mathematical knowledge is required. If you are off to college or entering the business world, you will need accounting skills for success in your future.

Marketing Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None
This course not only discusses the selling and advertising of goods and products, but enters into the understanding of pricing, distribution, promotion, product value and much, much more. You will understand the marketing tools that work together to affect the marketplace and you as a consumer.

Advertising Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None

This course will introduce students to the advertising industry and to a variety of career opportunities in advertising, mass media, and advertising departments in business firms. Students will be instructed on techniques used in developing creative layouts and copy.

Sports Marketing Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None

This course is designed to introduce students to the sports industry. The course focuses on promoting teams, product design, modeling stadiums, and designing uniforms as well as the specific marketing strategies used in sports industry.

Fashion Marketing Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None

This course is designed to introduce students to the fashion industry. The course focuses on the latest fashion trends, designers, the world of fashion and acquiring an understanding of fashion terminology as well as the specific marketing
strategies used in retail fashion.

Web Design Grades 9-12

Prerequisite — None

This course provides students with experience in web design. Students will use Dream weaver 3 to create websites focusing on a professional business layout. Students will have the opportunity to create their own website.

Leadership Grades 10-12

Prerequisite – None

This is a half-year course that introduces students to a conceptual understanding of leadership. The course explores student understanding of leadership while challenging them to learn aspects of the leadership process. It is designed to promote useful citizenship and aid the students in the development of the leadership qualities important to a successful quality of life. The course addresses leadership and management skills and other topics relevant to quality leadership.
